Our Story

The Movement Care Collective’s outreach program has provided over 400 classes.

In 2015, Caitlin Kolb founded Pilates Done Differently (PDD), formerly Studio 20, in San Francisco. She created this community to provide her Pilates clients with a more therapeutic environment than what was traditionally offered in fitness studios. Her team of practitioners provides one-on-one and group classes for clients seeking a highly individualized and trauma-informed approach to care.

After years of providing community embodiment support through PDD, Caitlin witnessed firsthand the ways in which embodied healing practices were made inaccessible to far too many. With the goal of creating increasing access, Caitlin first brought movement support to underserved communities through her work with survivors of domestic violence in San Francisco. She taught bi-weekly classes at a low-income housing community, which was home to many survivors starting anew.

In 2019, she was approached by the generous leaders of the charitable organization who provided the initial funding for PDD’s outreach program. This grant funding made it possible for Caitlin and her team to collaborate with SF General Hospital’s Physical Therapy department and other service-based programs to connect women from underserved communities with a dedicated PDD practitioner. Together, with their movement instructor and referring medical professional, individuals experienced body-based healing support to help transition them out of medical rehabilitative care and back into their everyday lives.

In its first few years, The Movement Care Collective’s outreach program provided over 400 classes to female-identifying clients who needed resources for continued care. In August 2021, The Movement Care Collective was awarded nonprofit status, setting us on the path to expand our offerings and impact.

Today, we serve clients of all gender identities, who would not otherwise have access to post-rehab movement care. Our Spanish-speaking program is launching in 2023 and we will continue working towards offering care in additional languages. We also hope to expand our list of movement modalities to include Feldenkrais, Gyrotonic, and personal training.
